Despite this, he continues to hunt monsters in low-rank Gates to help pay for his mother’s medical expenditures. Sung Jin-Woo, a twenty-year-old Hunter, is renowned as the “World’s Weakest” due to his pitiful power when compared to even a meager E-Rank. Ordinary humans were given superhuman abilities and were known as “Hunters” in order to confront these heinous animals. “The Gate” arose ten years ago, bridging the gap between the actual world and the domain of magic and monsters. This book may not be for everyone, but what book is? And it's good to see these types of books coming out rather than the usual, same old regurgitated storylines that we've seen over and over again. I read other reviews, which don't influence mine, but to see how some own voiced reviewers felt about this book and to further educate myself. But I'm rating it higher because (1) fuck you to the haters who auto-rate it without even reading it because of their transphobia and (2) because I love that this is unlike anything I've ever read before and gave me some insight that I didn't know prior to reading this. In all honesty, I probably would've given this book 3-3.5 stars. First of all, this may be one of my favorite covers of all time! I mean, just look at it!! Second, this is the first time in a VERRRRRRY long time that I read other reviews before writing mine. "We know our demographic, and we appreciate you giving up your place in line for Harry Potter," Sagal tells the throng filling the lawn. They have come to Millennium Park for a special taping of National Public Radio's weekly news-based quiz show on a comfortably cool Thursday evening in mid-July, a few days after the popular alternative-rock festival catered to an entirely different kind of crowd. Don't Tell Me! The gathering of approximately 10,000 people cheer and hoot for Sagal, who looks tiny standing under the Pritzker Pavilion's massive gray steel curves and protruding blocks of orange wood. "Well, eat your heart out, Pitchfork Festival!" exclaims the host of Wait Wait. Peter Sagal is having a rock-star moment. "More than we want to admit, many of us might want to dabble in such experiences," he says. Up close and personal: Sagal explores risqué behavior in The Book of Vice. The altar had a crucified Christ in the center, statues of the Virgin Mary, St. Angels and biblical scenes covered the ceiling. The tall, narrow windows each had a saint in stained glass. Two girl-sized statues of angels holding fonts of holy water stood by the main door. Except for the pews and the floors, almost every interior surface was covered with statues or paintings. The empty air was still vibrating slightly with the suppressed fidgets of children. There was a smell of polished wood, hymnals, and rubber floor-mats. In Strasburg, North Dakota, he looks inside the Sts. And man, does he ramble! He clocks twenty-five thousand miles on his van, driving up, down, and across “that immense Western short-grass prairie now mostly plowed under.” He noses around countless dusty, little towns, seeing what there is to see, noting down detail after extraordinary detail. Today, I’ll review Great Plains.įrazier’s book chronicles his Great Plains rambles of the 1980s. This is the third in a series of twelve monthly posts in which I’ll reread my three favorite travel books – Edward Hoagland’s Notes from the Century Before (1969), John McPhee’s Coming into the Country (1977), and Ian Frazier’s Great Plains (1989) – and compare them. Despite the range of problems covered, Kendall carefully and sensitively deconstructs each dilemma to explain how feminism has failed and how these failures have been consistently overlooked by those of us who pride ourselves as feminists. Drawing on her personal experiences of poverty, violence, and as a parent, Kendall’s essays covered urgent topics like patriarchy, poverty, intimate partner violence, education, reproductive justice, respectability politics, hypersexualisation, classism, sexual harassment, and disability. Kendall’s ferocious essays courageously call for feminists to rethink the way we carry out our movement and reveals in detail how mainstream feminists have failed to take into account populations that are too often excluded. Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women White Feminists Forgot by Mikki Kendall is a searing indictment of the mainstream feminist movement and its glaring flaws that have left some of the most vulnerable behind. Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women White Feminists Forgot by Mikki Kendall | Non-Fiction | Bloomsbury Publishing | 288 pages | Review by Firqin Sumartono The history of feminist politics has shown the dangers of ignoring the work of marginalized women, cis and trans. Any narrative that assumes women can be treated as a united voting bloc with no concern for race, class, or other factors is short-sighted and deeply misguided. Protection of Endangered Species: Fireman in the Wild WARNING: This review may prove to be dangerously combustible! But if she doesn’t find someone she can lean on when the heat gets intense, her life may go down in flames. Rowan knows she can’t complicate things with Gull-any distractions in the air or on the ground could be lethal. And though Rowan, as a rule, doesn’t hook up with other smoke jumpers, Gull is convinced he can change her mind.īut everything is thrown off balance when a dark presence lashes out against Rowan, looking to blame someone for last year’s tragedy. One of the best of this year’s rookie crop, Gulliver Curry is a walking contradiction, a hotshot firefighter with a big vocabulary and a winter job at a kids’ arcade. At this point, returning to the wilds of Montana for the season feels like coming home-even with reminders of the partner she lost last season still lingering in the air. Being a Missoula smoke jumper is in Rowan’s blood: her father is a legend in the field. But there’s also little else as thrilling-at least to Rowan Tripp. Little else in life is as dangerous as fire jumping. In this #1 New York Times bestseller, Nora Roberts delves into the world of elite firefighters who thrive on danger and adrenaline-men and women who wouldn’t know how to live life if it wasn’t on the edge. During their lunch together, she starts to have a bit of a breakdown.Īt one point, Franny explains if it weren't so late, she'd drop her major, English. In the short story “Franny”, Franny meets her boyfriend Lane for a football weekend at his college. I even got goosebumps when her brother Zooey finally talks to Franny. And I love the Glass family and their oh-so-subtle care for one another. I love the backstreets into religion and philosophy. I love the word choice and turns of phrase and wit. I've read the book twice now and I adore it. The 1961 book comprises of a short story titled "Franny" and a novella "Zooey”. So when Zooey tries to talk Franny out of her funk, we get not only a case study of familial love but also an intellectual exploration of a spiritual crisis.įranny and Zooey are the youngest siblings of the Glass Family, characters from J.D. But unlike Holden, Franny-and her brother, Zooey-were raised on world religion by their two eldest brothers. Like a certain Holden Caulfield, Franny sees the people around her as egotistical and “phony". I’m sick of myself and everybody else that wants to make some kind of a splash. She says: I’m sick of not having the courage to be an absolute nobody. College student Franny Glass is in an existential funk.
